Description:
In the Pacific, labour mobility has provided workers with opportunities to work abroad and businesses to fill labour and / or skills gaps. As a result, there are several bilateral, sub-regional and regional arrangements that include seasonal and temporary labour mobility schemes and access agreements. There is also intra-Pacific migration, and labour migration from Asia into the Pacific, with Fiji, Cook Islands, and Palau being notable countries of destination. Whilst literature on social protection for migrant workers does exist, it has largely focused on migrant workers from Pacific Island Countries and their access to social protection in countries of destination such as Australia and New Zealand. In field level consultations with Pacific constituents, the lack of social protection, particularly paid maternity leave, paid sick leave, and public health access, has repeatedly been raised as a key concern. At the same time, there remains a critical lack of data on social protection for migrant workers within Pacific Island countries.
