In Fiji,forests, marine resources, agricultural production, and nature-based tourismare all crucial to its economy. theNational Climate Change Policy 2018 - 2030 has promulgated a vision of “aresilient and prosperous Fiji, in which the wellbeing of current and futuregenerations is supported and protected by an equitable, socially inclusive, lowcarbon, and environmentally sustainable economy.” In alignment with thisvision, developing and implementing a sustainable natural resource sectors - inforestry, fisheries and agriculture- is a key priority for Fiji-s nationalclimate change response. This includes key interventions such as improving landuse management planning processes, reforestation/afforestation, climate smartagriculture, and promoting sustainable, low-carbon livelihoods of communities. Fijifaces challenges in land management and resource degradation. Effectivewatershed management, efficient agricultural water use, biodiversityconservation, and deforestation reduction are important for long-termproductivity. Urban development has led farmers to move into previouslyforested areas and increased monocrop farming has resulted in deforestation andunsustainable practices. Sustainable agricultural practices and communityinitiatives that reduce the demand for timber products can help alleviatepressure on forests. The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways (MoAW) supportsvarious climate-smart agriculture and low carbon livelihood programs, includingintegrated cropping, agroforestry, revitalization of native seeds, and use oforganic fertilizers. The MoAW also assists smallholder farmers in convertingwaste into biogas and transforming fresh produce into higher value consumerproducts. In Fiji, theWorld Bank, through the Emission Reduction Program (ERP) is supporting effortsto lower carbon emissions through activities such as reforestation, sustainableland management and climate smart agriculture.
